Fairly predictable action movie that was ok("ish") but not one that I would re-watch or recommend.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023) (2023)
Rated 4/10
Luther, a great BBC TV series that is 100% worth watching if you haven't done so already.

Luther the movie is a poor cash attempt on the brand and Idris Elba.

Where the TV series had a credible storyline that was interesting this movie is a far fetched fantasy that tries to play every cliché going. It got to the stage where I could predict the next stupid turn..... spoiler alert

the car crashes through the ice in a remote mountain lake and low and behold a helicopter arrives right on time and fully suited frogmen are able to jump in and rescue him from drowning......hmmm thankfully someone had the foresight to send a police helicopter with frogmen ready to go up a mountain in the middle of winter just in case there was a frozen lake....

Action packed ... ok yes
Great lead actor ... ok yes
Good credible storyline ... not really
Will I watch again ... NO

Love & Mercy (2014) (2014)
Rated 9/10
Sat and watched this movie (again) last night. It is currently on BBC iplayer and would recommend you spending a few hours of your time with it.

The film cover the metal health struggles Brian Wilson had and how they "influenced" his music in particular the period when he stopped touring with the band and lead a studio life. It certainly shows what a genius he was in being able to get the sounds from his head in to real life.

The film also covers the abusive control Eugene Landy had over Brian. Whilst it is apparent that Brian needed help at various points during the 70s & 80s there is no doubting that Landy abused his position. He was finally charged by State of California Board of Medical Quality with ethical and license code violations stemming from the improper prescription of drugs and various unethical personal and professional relationships with patients (not just Brian).

The attention to detail within the film is great. The studio scenes are beautiful recreated.. check the clip below.

As they state in the trailer:

Once you know the story... You'll never hear the music in the same way.

Stan & Ollie (2018) (2018)
Rated 9/10
I streamed this movie last night and fully agree with Quad5point1 that this is a truly wonderful movie. Steve Coogan and John C Reilly excel in the roles as Laurel & Hardy and whilst there are great moments when the "live" comedy performances are portrayed, it is the story behind the characters where they both get it so right.

The story revolves around the latter years of the famous duo and the struggles they encountered trying to reignite their movie careers. It gives an insight to their personal lives and more importantly how each character interacted away from the camera.

As said, it is at times a very moving movie but also one that has you smiling through the watery eyes.

A must see!

A funny movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. Based on a true story, this movie gives you a bellyful of laughs helped by a cast of actors that are all well suited to the role. This is an action packed slapstick comedy, nothing more, nothing less. The pace of the movie is quick. The laughs are frequent and adult orientated.

Ignoring some of the on-line reviews it is suffice to say that if you liked "Hangover" and its sequels you will enjoy this movie, if you prefer something more highbrow then avoid.

Baby Driver (2017) (2017)
Rated 9/10
Quite a good action movie with lots of guns and fast cars along with a reasonable story line. What made this movie for me was the soundtrack and how it was used in relation to the storyline of the main character.

Lots of classic tracks from Bob & Earl, T.Rex, Damned and Carla Thomas to name a few. I also enjoyed the way the opening track (Bob & Earl) played out like a pop video with the graffiti graphics. I have posted the youtube link below.

PS Since posting this review/comment I have read a printed interview with the director where he explains how he first came up with a list of songs that he wanted to use as the soundtrack and the script was written to fit in with those songs rather than fitting the songs into the script as is the norm. Explains why it looks to me like a long pop promo.

Standoff (2016) (2016)
Rated 6/10
Fairly predictable (and flawed) plot revolving around a troubled individual who gains some personal redemption by protecting a young girl from an assassin.
First movie I have seen Thomas Jane in a leading role and he plays the character well. Fishburne is the bad guy, very dark, moody and convincing.

They're A Weird Mob (1966) (1966)
Rated 8/10
This is an enjoyable comedy of Australian life in the 1960s seen through the eyes of a hard working Italian immigrant. There are lots of reference to Aussie lingo and the problems he encounters assimilating himself into the culture of his new home. As pointed out by other web reviews the movie can at times seem like a propaganda movie with Australia being shown as the land of opportunity, jobs galore and a place where everyone who is willing to work hard will succeed no matter what their background is. The movie is in some respects a little dated but taken as to what it really is (a well filmed 1960s comedy) it's worth watching.

Safe Haven (2013) (2013)

Written off by some reviewers as a simple love story, my personal view is that the film offers a little more than that. Ok it is a fairly predictable plot that has, as expected, a little twist at the end but it achieves what it sets out to do, namely entertain me with a little suspense, a little romance and some stunning locations (it was filmed around Southport, South Carolina).

Get Hard (2015) (2015)
Rated 7/10
Not a bad money. Predictable story line & predictable acting from Will Ferrell but nevertheless funny and lots of belly laughs without the normal gross out scenes that some American comedy insists in having. Lots of stereotypical roles, greedy bankers, black gangbangers, white supreme power gangs and Mexican immigrants working in rich peoples home but the butt of the jokes is Will's role as the rich WASP.

A wasted evening. After all the hype I expected a movie with an all star cast that would at least entertain a little or keep me slightly interested, this movie failed on all accounts.
