YankeeDisc SUBS ● 23rd Aug 2018		I seem to remember seeing this film on original UK release as an 8 or 9 year old with my father, and in Technicolor and VistaVision, it was glorious. Saw it a couple more times as a young teenager in local cinemas, and much later on terrestial TV, where the film does not have the same impact. A fairly standard story of men at war on an Attack Transport "liberty ship" APA-22 the "Belinda", in action in the South Pacific during WWII, from late 1943 when she is commissioned, up until being severely damaged while supporting the Okinawa landings April/May 1945. The action sequences are first-rate, and the film tells of the crews constant training, and boredom, followed by landings and the horrors of kamikaze attacks. Blink and you'll miss 'em: Clint Eastwood has a one-line spoken debut as a Navy corpsman, and David Jansen is up on the Captain's bridge as a "talker". I sent off to Amazon USA for a DVD copy around 1999, and still have it somewhere in the vaults, albeit in 4:3 ratio.
