Elizabeth Lorimer is a young girl sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle while her mother is 'dangerously ill' in hospital. Her father Stephen played by Stanley Baker, is a somewhat 'shifty' character, who due to some business deals has to keep a low profile from the law.

His daughter Elizabeth is a 'Daddy's Girl', and misses her father terribly, but will lie repeatedly to her father's sister Evelyn about his whereabouts, and even tells a police detective "porkies" in an effort to protect her father.
Her aunt Evelyn is a seemingly cold woman, driven to succeed at all costs, and is in a loveless marriage of her own making, much to the chagrin of her upright husband Henry Acheson, who is a real English gentleman, the 'strong, silent' type. Eventually, after all the rancour levelled at his niece, he tells his wife he is leaving her....my, my what a surprise.

Eventually, matters come to a head, and Elizabeth and her father, plus a policeman and Uncle Henry go to the Hospital to learn that the mother is out of danger after an operation, and will make a recovery. Stephen Lorimer, Elizabeth's father has to go into police custody to atone for his sins, and they all go back to the posh home to find Aunt Evelyn full of remorse, and a reconciliation occurs between aunt and uncle....hugs and kisses all round.

There is a character I haven't mentioned....that of Cassie, the live in maid at the Acheson's swanky home. Dora Bryan playing Cassie is a real friend to the young girl, Elizabeth, who when she isn't wringing her hands and missing Daddy, she's crying.
Cassie is so like a mother to the girl, and shows her love and understanding, even willing to lose her position as Maid to help the girl keep in touch with her father.

Regrettably, the character Cassie verbalises in that awful 'little girl' sing-song voice that Dora Bryan seemed to use in a lot of her performances....it's just too camp for words, but is a source of great hilarity for me.

Cy Endfield also directed a 50s-noir film "Hell Drivers" tt0051713 and of course "Zulu" tt0058777 both starring Stanley Baker.....hmmm, interesting
