Aha! ...there's the VHS I had (was that there yesterday?).

Submarine films tend to be good in general, due to the confined space - high tension drama that these environments naturally lend themselves to, but whereas a film like Crimson Tide or The Hunt For Red October are based in big ideas with intricate plotting, the subs are state of the art and it's all ultra slick, which can't match the tension here. Which is essentially about a bunch of guys sweating away in a rusty diesel powered clockwork tube that feels like it's always in imminent danger of falling apart at any given moment.

The men are all constantly on the verge of cracking up themselves, and do... all the while the allies drop charges to destroy them. Which is why Prochnow is great as the sub captain, as his character has to deal with all this at the same time.

You feel like you've been through an ordeal yourself when it ends, as you go through all this with them.

Surely one of the best war films of all time? Epic in all senses of the word with an incredibly brave and bleak ending. The soundtrack is great too.

Have to agree with you Magic Marmalade, it's a cracking movie. I still have to watch it though with German language and English subtitles, the voice overdubs completely ruined the atmosphere and authenticity of it.

I used to have the VHS of the "Film" when it was released that way in the nineties, but was originally a mini-series for T.V.

Think mine was a "Directors cut", and do have vague recollection of it being released complete in cinemas.

Best film about submarine warfare ever made, and possibly a contender for one of the greatest war films too.

As far as I remember there was a theatrical cut different from the TV version?

Just added the UK DVD and noticed that this is in Cinema World. Should it not be in TV World ??. TV is certainly the first place I saw it as a miniseries
