alexlincs 18th Oct 2020		Rated 5/10 Maybe I just didn't get this, but I really didn't enjoy it. I saw Saw (2004) at the cinema and really enjoyed it, so I have nothing against the director, but this takes a bit of the jump scares of Paranormal Activity and makes them even more uneventful, a bit of Tim Burton (namely Beetlejuice and Corpse Bride at least in terms of make-up), homages the fog and lighting effects from 90s horror films like Necronomicon, but never goes full camp. Something like Ti West's House of the Devil works for me as it homages 70s horror like Halloween, but is sincere about its source material and manages to be scary. I saw Mother! which is an uneven mess of a film, but oh boy did it build to a crescendo. Or House of 1000 Corpses a film which divides people, but the Captain Spaulding character made the film interesting, I saw Uncle Peckerhead this year which does the same thing of taking a loveable weirdo and adding a bit of heart to it. I like Patrick Wilson as an actor, but the role could have been played by any actor of a similar age; Matthew Fox, Aaron Eckhart take your pick. The characters are faceless, the scares obvious and boring as the music plays loudly before every single one. The campy homages not funny, not clever, not sincere. A B-Movie with Hollywood production values which is trite and derivative, but for some reason people love it. 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
