“Soaring and gorgeous” – Richard Lawson, VANITY FAIR

“They don’t make films like this anymore” – David Sexton, EVENING STANDARD

La La Land received 14 Academy Awards nominations, tying for the most ever alongside Titanic and All About Eve. The instant classic of 2016, with Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone evoking classic Hollywood in the present-day LA. Sebastian (Gosling) is a struggling jazz musician, dreaming of opening a classic piano bar, and Mia (Stone) an aspiring actress. Following one of the most original and unapologetically unromantic meet-cutes in Hollywood history, the two continue to cross paths in anti-romance style, until finally – they connect, and the love story of the decade ensues.

Director Damian Chazelle celebrates Hollywood whilst knowingly warning of its artifice “They worship everything, and they value nothing” opines Sebastian to Mia, once they finally start dating. This gentle irreverence prevents the film becoming a pastiche and ensures what is essentially a love-note to tinsel town doesn’t get sickly sweet. Dreams are big in this film, but saccharine is not. Character, story, style and fantastic musical numbers all come together to create one of the finest cinematic experiences of recent times.

I put this In the DVD player. Opening of the film they are In cars on the Freeway. And Then they start singing In the cars, Then they get out (Think Everybody Hurts REM Vid) and they start Dancing on the cars. Reaching for the Off button something stopped Me. And I am Glad It did, As the film rolled on It just got better. I Highly Enjoyed this Movie. A sort of Grease for the Noughties. H.

I would like to be able to mark this a helpful review zab, but alas...

...I hate, detest, and loathe musicals (musical drama) in equal measure. And for the same reason that I would squirm at the idea of tomato ketchup on ice cream...

both are very nice in their own context, but neither drama, or music should ever be together in this way. It JUST AIN'T NATRAL!

Either give m me theatre/drama, or some other story on the one hand, and then, quite separately, music on the other, or give me neither.

The idea that people just burst in to song in the middle of a story they are telling is entirely alien to me. (And please God don' anyone be inspired by that to make Alien: The musical!).

((And no, I i'nt too keen on operas either - in their entirety... I can take the songs by themselves, but not when it gets in the way of the story.))

Phew... got that out of my system at last.... normal service shall now resume :)

Absolutely chuffin' brilliant!

This got me at "Hello" (which wasn't how it started but anyway...)! Right from the opening dance number to the closing (dare I say unexpected?) scene, this is a very clever re-energising (I hate the word "rebooting", 21st Century foxes!) of the whole musical genre - expect more to follow!

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are just superb, along with the supporting cast. Even John Legend, who we did not know was in it!

See it before the songs appear in The Voice UK!
