Originally released in 1990 in Japan as "Crisis 2050", the film performed poorly, and was then re-cut for the American market and released as such on 25 November 1992. For the American release, Sarafian relinquished his director's credit, and the film was released under the Alan Smithee alias, as was formerly used for films whose directors disowned them.
