Still a class act.

I was in one of those moods where I needed a good oldie to settle into, and decided the time had come to watch this one again.

This is, to my personal recollection, almost wholly responsible for the revival of ballroom dancing as an accepted popular pastime... For all through my earliest years ballroom dancing was held in the greatest contempt by the world at large... greeted with disdain not least by me and my friends and my whole generation as the squarest of the square, the saddest of the sad...

...But such is the impact of this movie, in how it makes even the most cynical viewers feel - such as myself - that it makes even the most ardent haters if ballroom even come to love the premise of the movie...

Firstly, due to the ruthless parodying of that world, through the lens of that brilliant, biting humour of our Australian friends, and their truly unique sense of humour on full display here, which sits somewhere between an acerbic British sense of humour and an oddball, Wes Anderson / Tim Burton sensibility...

...And then, due to the absolutely chill inspiring finale, which gets me every time.

It is, essentially, an absurdist version of Dirty Dancing: Hopelessly awkward girl wants to get with Mr hot-stuff, and be his dance partner, against the "strict" aspirations of the fantastically serious ballroom dancing world, which would deny, not only their paring, but also, their love.

You don't have to love the romance, or even the dancing bit to enjoy this, as there's also that singular wit, and comedy, which elevate this above the average.

(I just wonder what the hell happened to the Australian movie industry, which at this time, was capable of producing something all their own, like both this, and the majestic: Muriel's Wedding - maybe threw their own thing over in order to go too "Hollywood", and conventional? - a shame, we need more of this kind of thing from them in the world of movies now!)
