I watched it again last night and - despite its flaws, which are legion (pun intended!) - I really enjoyed it again.

OK, there are plot-holes aplenty (Why did some people get the infection immediately and die whereas some others turned into the "Family"? Why did Anthony Zerbe's character start banging on about machines while seemingly not yet affected yet the rest of the "Family" blindly follow his mantra after infection?) but the general idea, although now cliched beyond belief!, of the last man on earth being the saviour of mankind, is compelling.

I had forgotten the "Christ" pose at the end, as subtle as a flying vampire!, but even that was not enough to put me off!

The book was written by Richard Matheson. He also wrote one called Hell House, filmed as The Legend Of Hell House

The Quiet Earth has similar origins too.

I do like the recent sitcom of The Last Man On Earth too (Hope they make more of that)

Sure was, as was The Last Man On Earth

This was based on the book: I Am Legend, wasn't it?

(and from which that promising but ultimately epic disappointment of a Will Smith film was derived - crappy CGI Vampire/Zombie-esque thing-a-ma- doo-dahs ruined the whole thing... was good up till then.)

 Rated 9/10
Excellent movie I saw at the cinema when I was 9 (I guess, going by the release date).

Charlton Heston is Charlton Heston, so that's OK. Anthony Zerbe is very unsettling as the main villain.

Neville is immune to the disease which appears to have wiped out about 99% of the population of the city (New York? Can't remember!) in which he is holed up. The infected ones lay siege to his house but he is tooled up, so that's OK.

He finds a woman (why must it always be a woman!), who is eventually his downfall.

But he is Charlton Heston, so that's OK.
