This is exactly the kind of western that developed in me an instinctive aversion to western: Large scale, but flat, and dull... a sprawling yawn.

...However, I thought I'd let it go all the way through, and it certainly gets very good in the last half hour or so, when all matter come to a head, and result in a siege finale.

The premise is that a young woman (Hepburn), adopted by a white frontier family, discovers she may be adopted from a native American tribe... forcibly, and they want her back, quite against the wishes of family alpha, and adoptive big brother (Lancaster), who's sentiments toward her may be a little more than familial (which is quite creepy in and of itself, regardless of genetic relationship).

But yeah... a whole heap of this has not aged well, from the "browned-up" John Saxon, lots of racial terms floating about freely, and broad depictions of the tribes-people...

...Nevertheless, as I said, it gets good at the end, as all the family secrets are revealed, and bother finally arrives at the doorstep because of it. For all it's faults, I feel the central story idea is a very strong one, and a potentially brilliant examination of race, prejudice, and how attitudes may alter in light of additional information... Would probably make for a good remake, either as a western, or just take this basic story and transplant it anywhere at any time, and it would work.
