...Still, there must have been an ominous tone about what was going on elsewhere in the world at the time.
I wonder if there's a story to go with this - might make a good film: making music against the back drop of impending war. |

| | Don't forget Rachmaninov was Russian, and Russia didn't really enter the war until it was attacked in 1941. And the recordings are probably American, given that the Philadelphia Orchestra perform, and America didn't enter the war until the end of that same year. Seen in that context, these recordings are basically pre-war. |
