 Good point... I hadn't thought of that TP.

...Still, there must have been an ominous tone about what was going on elsewhere in the world at the time.

I wonder if there's a story to go with this - might make a good film: making music against the back drop of impending war.

 Don't forget Rachmaninov was Russian, and Russia didn't really enter the war until it was attacked in 1941. And the recordings are probably American, given that the Philadelphia Orchestra perform, and America didn't enter the war until the end of that same year. Seen in that context, these recordings are basically pre-war.

 Just looking at the dates for the recordings here.... quite a time to be recording music too:

Three of which were recorded during the start of the second world war.

 Have listed as International, as unclear where it originates. Insert has the notes in three languages (English only scanned) and printing was in Germany.
