Notes mono recordings made 6-7/5/53 (tracks 1-3) & 24/6/50 (4-6) in the grosser saal, musikverein, vienna; the tyrolian heldentenor, franz lechleitner, sings on the siegfried "waldweben". 2pp liner-notes on knappertbusch and his background, including being sacked from his position as music director of the bavarian state opera in 1936 for refusing to join the nazi party, and his relationship with the vienna philharmonic from 1929 onwards (he continued to direct the orchestra at the salzburg festival until 1955, the start of the von karajan era) by mark audus, transl. into french by elizabeth rhodes, into german by andreas klatt, italian by giorgio giandomenici; the german lyric to the waldweben, and its english translation occupy the next 2pp. an analogue to digital remaster, part of decca's historic series: notes on which complete the booklet.
