An introduction presents the theme upon which the entire work is based. It undergoes many transmutations during the course of the piece, the tempo markings being Andante maestoso, Allegro ma non troppo, Allegretto pastorale, Allegro marziale animato, with a coda Andante Maestoso to bring the work to a close.
