Franz Liszt takes us to a much darker place than we are accustomed to, in his Via Crucis, with only fleeting relief from the passion of the story.

The video below is of the whole work but it is divided into sections which are clearly marked, if you wish to listen to any particular part.

In Station V*, Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry His cross, and the faltering, stumbling pace represented by the organ becomes more steady.

In Station VI, we are allowed a brief vision of the beauty which overcomes evil, as the choir sing the Easter chorale O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, familiar from Bach's setting in the St Matthew Passion. Liszt uses only the first verse compared to two in the Bach, and he adds an unexpected exultation in the final line "gegrüßet seist du mir"

You may find that little surprise rather effective
