You could well be right about the barcode only being on the obi, MM - I just checked my Japanese copy of the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS, apparently a 1990 release if I interpret the numbers on the back insert correctly (I think I bought it back then, as an import in an Australian store), and there's no barcode on that, either - unfortunately the shop removed the obi, so I can't confirm that it was on there. However, that disc (also from Toshiba-EMI) has a different numbering convention from EMI's usual international pop/rock CD's (which was CDP 7 46XXX-2), so I wonder if Japanese pressings for other countries (like this entry) would have had the obi or not? Anyway, I have found a few other Japan-for-Japan pressings without barcodes, all bought as imports, all without obi's, and all coming from Atlantic/Warner-Pioneer, one disc each by Arthur Conley, Wilson Pickett, and Percy Sledge, all bought late 80's to early 90's as far as I can remember. Another possibility is this disc was a Japan for US pressing which would have been packaged in a cardboard longbox for US use, and the longbox had the barcode (I think I have a couple like that too, but don't remember what they are at the moment).
I wonder if my impression maybe coloured by the prevalence of the barcode... Did some countries adopt it's use before others?
... Because it would be very odd for Japan to be behind other countries technologically in any respect, so my otherwise natural indicator of date: pre barcode / post barcode would break down if Japan used it later.
...although, there is the complicating factor of the Obi strip... that's usually where the barcode on Japanese products is to be found, and mostly explains why it doesn't appear on the item itself.
Conclusion: Very likely this originally had an Obi strip (?)
I would have thought 1983 too, because of the lowish number in the 47000 series, but Gramophone reviewed this in March 1985, and there isn't any earlier mention.
Again, no date, but given the absence of barcode, and that details indicate it was made in Japan for many International markets with the early Japanese CD matrix style, I'm thinking this is a very early CD... 1983 / 4-ish ?
