Canadian soprano Edith Wiens has a lighter and thinner voice than many soprano soloists, and uses the French style of vibrato in which the pitch remains constant. The effect is emotionally compelling in Dona Nobis Pacem, in much the same way that the first soloist to sing this work, Renee Flynn, was.

The lead violin is allowed free reign for the introduction to Reconciliation as Thomson indulges Vaughan Williams' romantic sensuality.

My favourite of the modern recordings of what was, in so many words, Vaughan Williams' War Requiem, and the coupling with the Mystical Songs adds another five delights culminating in the most exultant demonstration of his agnosticism.
