The Te Deum is RVW at his most ceremonial; think his Old Hundredth with trumpets (which the Old Hundredth did have, at the 1953 Coronation)
Serenade to Music is typically pastoral, with a lingering soupçon of portamento in the strings playing

Dona Nobis Pacem is the heartfelt plea of one who served as an ambulanceman in WWI, and the lyrical passion of the work contrasts powerfully with the boxy sound of this BBC recording which recalls the world of the 30s and the books of the time with their black-and-white woodcut illustrations. The fear of the coming war is almost tangible in the performance, and Renee Flynn's opening cry has one rushing for the Stop button while you gather strength to bear the intensity of the Agnus Dei which begins the suite; something which never quite happens in more recent recordings of the work.

Flynn and Henderson had earlier that year taken the solo parts for the Premier Performance of the work in Huddersfield, where the Huddersfield Choral Society had commissioned the work: the conductor was Albert Coates and the orchestra was the Halle from Manchester

The Te Deum was written for the coronation of H.M. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and recorded by EMI in Westminster Abbey, 12 May 1937, with the Coronation Choir and Orchestra, and released on HMV RG7001+2

Serenade To Music was written for Sir Henry Wood and this recording was conducted by him, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, 15 Oct.1938 for release on Colombia LX257+8 with soloists:
Styles Allen, Isobel Baillie, Elsie Suddaby soprano; Margaret Balfour, Muriel Brunskill, Astra Desmond, Mat Jarrad contralto; Parry Jones, Heddle Nash, Frank Titterton, Water Widdop tenor; Roy Hendserson baritone; Norman Allin, Robert Easton, Harold Williams bass. The libretto is taken from a speech by Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice.

Dona Nobis Pacem is conducted here by the composer and was recorded on acetate from the first broadcast performance in Nov.1936 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with soloists Renee Flynn soprano and Roy Henderson baritone.
