Notes

Dame Myra Hess, widely regarded as one of the greatest living women pianists, was born in St. John's Wood, London, in 1890, and has made the British Capital her home throughout her life.
Dame Myra made her first American tour in 1922, laid the foundation of her unique popularity from coast to coast, and subsequently made 22 consecutive tours of the United Statesz, omitting only the years of World War II, when she remained in London organizing the now historic concerts in the National Gallery. In recognition of her work and her great artistry King George VI personally decorated her with the Order of the British Empire.
