Magic Marmalade 2nd Sep 2020		I'll take another look at the whole Columbia / EMI / CBS affair, as, sure as eggs is eggs, this only goes to show that there is always an exception to any general rule... In this case, the demise of the EMI Columbia name meant that Sony / CBS were able to start issuing records under the Columbia name from 1991 onwards, in territories / countries where previously EMI had the right to use that name - before which almost every country seems to have one or the other: Columbia (CBS / Sony) or Columbia (EMI)... ...Except, it seems, Canada! :) Evidence seems to suggest they used both at different times, so I'll have to see if there are any fixed times these changes occured, then review all variations of the Columbia / CBS / Sony / EMI relationships for Canada on all worlds .... *Groan!* :(



PhilMH 1st Sep 2020		I might have to revise my previous comments to "International including US and Canada"! Discogs has 1981 US and Canadian LP pressings showing CBS rather than Columbia, so maybe CBS decided that, as classical releases generally sell far less than non-classical releases, they would just have one manufacturing run for each format to satisfy the world market, and so they used CBS as the label brand to avoid any trademark issues (though I suspect US pressings were more likely to be exported to CBS' subsidiaries than Canadian ones).

I lieu of a fixed country for release, I would favour International over USA, which is the one country I think we have a firm basis for saying it's not, at least! (Should be on Columbia for US release). I won't change anything for the time being, and just wait until perhaps someone can illuminate us further :)



PhilMH 1st Sep 2020		Hi MM, I am actually wondering if this is actually a - wait for it - International edition for countries outside North America and Japan. The reference to "CBS Disques" on the back could be a reference to CBS Canada's French name (for Quebec) or for France. I'm fairly sure that I bought my copy here in Australia, and not in an import shop, so it would have been distributed by CBS Records Australia Limited as a "local" release, but I don't think I have any Aussie catalogues from the period to substantiate that (Platterlog was non-classical only).

PhilMH 30th May 2019		P.S. Deezer also has this as 29th September 1987 (which was a Tuesday), but Google Play Music has it as the 28th; itunes doesn't have a date other than the original 1959 copyright date. I am inclined to think that the 28th was the shipping date, and 29th the in-store date, and Tuesdays were the usual US in-store days then.



PhilMH 30th May 2019		This is much earlier than 1990, because it still shows the company name CBS Inc., whereas the name became CBS Records Inc. in 1988, before becoming Sony Music Entertainment in 1991. This is listed in a Schwann Compact Disc catalogue from November 1987, so release date is before that. Amazon US says 29 September 1987, and I think that is likely to be correct.
