janusz olejniczak playing upon chopin's own an 1831 pleyel, the inconsistencies of timbre from one part of its range to another of which piano add a dimension to the compositions that cannot be guessed from their character when played upon modern, even-toned and, well, tame instruments designed to allow - to require - their players' to use their skills to evoke the moods and emotions desired. chopin's 1831 pleyel colours everything played upon it - and, consciously or not, he must surely have composed with this in mind.
its action, likewise, is creaky and demands resort to the rubato for which the composer's pieces and performances were famous - to find the first, true starting-place of chopin's piano music, look first to how it plays on his piano.
on the larghetto from the concerto in f minor, olejniczak is joined by the ensemble mosaïque also playing upon period instruments, conducted by christophe coin.
