Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) embarks on a lonesome mission to offer assistance protecting a remote outpost, under threat of Sioux natives. His journey leads him across the desolate plains of the American prairie. Once settled, the diplomatic Dunbar befriends the suspicious natives. He is lovingly accepted by them and, after a while, falls in love with a Sioux-raised white woman. When, after a while, others of the American army show up, and the Sioux are on the verge of being overrun, Dunbar faces a tough choice.
