Here in the US I never heard of buying one tape, then keep exchanging it. Here it seems every liquor store and gas station had a video rental place. You paid a dollar or two rental, then brought it back the next day. (After, if you were lucky enough to have two VCR's, making a copy of it).

Then, as prices came down, the rental stores slowly faded away, until today there's very few left. The biggest is a chain of vending machines, called the "Red Box" where you can rent video games and DVD's.

For my wife and myself, now it's actually cheaper to go to "Best Buy" and buy the DVD of a film we want to see, than it is for the two of us to go to the theater. (You actually have to WORK to spend more than $ 10.00 (US) or so for a DVD. "Blur-ray" may be more, but I don't have one.

I got my first Beta machine about 1988, but I think they had already been out for quite some time by then. I have read over the years various conflicting accounts about the development of both Beta and VHS that seem to date it around the late 1970's.

More easy now just buying them from a department store J&B hifi for example as this title is now on DVD and blue ray

That's interesting. When video libraries first started(tell me if it was the same in the USA or UK, as it was here in Australia), you'd buy the tape(VHS or Beta) at the cost price(be it $60, $70 or $80 Australian), you'd take it home, watch it then bring it back to the store and swap it for another in the same cassette format. Then came the libraries that charged a nominal #5 overnight fee and you returned the tape the following day. Older titles could be hired on a weekly basis. Sound familiar?

That $ 69.95 (US) price tag on the tape itself is what they sold for in those days! That's why there were so many video rental stores
