Biography - Fillmore Auditorium    USA

The Fillmore Auditorium began in 1912 as Majestic Hall. It went through various names and management until approximately 1954 when Charles Sullivan, who was already booking R&B shows there, took over lease. He renamed it the Fillmore Auditorium after The Fillmore District it was the heart of at the time.

Between December 10, 1965 and July 4, 1968, Bill Graham produced dance concerts at the venue that would give it it's fame. When he took over the Carousel Ballroom, renaming it Fillmore West, The Fillmore Auditorium hosted sporadic shows by various promoters using variations of name to distinguish it from Fillmore West: i.e. Old Fillmore, New Old Fillmore. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, punk music promoter Paul Rat put on shows there calling it The Elite Club.

Bill Graham eventually returned to presenting shows at the venue in the mid-1980s until the Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the building in October 1989. Bill Graham's untimely death in 1991 ended his era. But his wish to reopen the venue with a complete retrofit happened in April 27, 1994, called simply The Fillmore. Since 2007 it has been under lease and operation by Live Nation.
