Biography - Ropes Bar UK This was a bar that was open for just one year - opened in November 1998 and closed a year later. It was based next door to the hearing aid shop and according to Google Maps - as of July 2014 - is now Kasbah cafe and bar. Run by a guy called Steve, it's biggest problem was attracting custom - every time I walked past when it was open, it was always empty. Kieron Deveney staged his Explosive Mouth poetry and music events there between December 1998 and November 24th 1999 the night Ropes closed it's doors for good. A shame... it was actually one of the better venues to host an open floor poetry and music night which were popular at the time since the acoustics were dry and warm, so you could perform unplugged and be audible and clear to all which was definitely not the case in other venues of the time like the Everyman Bistro, The Egg Cafe or The Hub Cafe each of which had particular problems with their acoustics. Sad fact was, Explosive Mouth became the only fortnightly event that guaranteed some trade for the bar... it's attempts at hosting other events failed. A shame. « Back to Venue Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
