Biography - Shea Stadium    USA

Opened in 1964, across the street from Flushing Meadows Corona Park (which was hosting the New York World's Fair). Named after William A. Shea, the man who brought National League baseball back to New York, after the Dodgers and Giants teams left for California, in the late 50's.

Built as an all-purpose circular stadium with 57,000+ seats, to mainly hold New York Mets major-league baseball games.. it played host to many other events including U.S. NFL football, New York Jets, religious rallies, even the Ice Capades!

During Yankee Stadium remodeling (1974-1975), Shea hosted the New York Yankees (baseball) and New York Giants (NFL football, only in '75) also. For NFL football, the lowest seats were on huge platforms which moved on tracks to be reconfigured for the event, since it was wedged-shaped for baseball.

It was the site of the very first major outdoor rock concert, The Beatles in August 1965 with the group returning the following summer. That event led to much larger events such as the Monterey Pop Festival (1968) and Woodstock (1969).

The Who, Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, Elton John, Eric Clapton, all played at Shea.
Billy Joel played the last concerts in the Summer of 2008, ("The Last Play at Shea") the year stadium closed and was demolished to make way for the parking lot for it's replacement, Citi Field.
