Biography - Wessex Hotel UK Build as a boarding house in the 1880's, The Hawthorns Hotel was owned and run by a couple called Langley between 1891 and 1939. During this period the property was expanded and during WWII the Home Office took the hotel over. Postwar the hotel was refurbished and sold in 1964. After a further change in owner the hotel was purchased in May 1965 by a Mr. Prattey. A change of name to the Wessex Hotel took place in December 1965 and it continued to be refurbished and updated. As is all too common a situation, in its latter days (2000's) running costs were a big problem and closure loomed. Despite pleas to save the building, which contained one of the largest hotel ballrooms in the area, the Wessex Dance Club held its last meeting there in December 2017, after 27 years. The hotel finally closed on January 2nd 2018, with demolition occurring later the same year. The site was cleared and a Premier Inn now occupies it. « Back to Venue Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
