The Palace    UK
Venue

A small but intimate cinema designed by office of the Frank Matcham Co. It once had silk wall panels and gas lighting and was originally run by the Aldershot Picture Palace Co., a private independent company.

It was sold to local council in the 1970’s and screened pornographic films.

It then operated as a night club, originally named Cheeks and then VOX. In Spring of 2010, it re-opened as a live music and special events venue known as The Palace, but this closed in 2013. It was re-opened as a banquet hall and conference centre on 18th December 2015.

The former Palace Cinema was given a Grade II Listed building by English Heritage in 1979.

Not to be confused with The Palais Ballroom, half a mile to the west, with it's December 1961 claim to fame.

Arnhem Gallery [Fairfield Halls]    UK
Venue

Main location for Croydon Folk Club for about 16 years; details below.

Croydon Folk Club began life as Croydon Folksong Club in 1965 at The Grange in Thornton Heath moving to The Waddon and then The Ship in the High Street. The Club moved to Fairfield Halls and used various rooms there between 1984 and 1999 when it was invited to use The Cedar Hall at Ruskin House.

In wide ranging changes Brian Dalton gradually lifted the pressure of organisation from long time club secretary, the late Rita Cherriman. Jenny Dalton became musical director, Phil Revnell became treasurer, Jeanne Revnell is the club hostess providing accommodation to guests who need it. Les Elvin helps the club by providing P.A, an ever increasing requirement these days. Mike and Crys Rothon have retired now so we no longer have dances, but we recommend our friends at Carshalton Ceilidhs. Communication is maintained with members by e mailed programmes.

The management team and many other regulars are the foundation upon which the club has been built and in total, over these Ruskin years, we have enjoyed a fine programme of outstanding folk music, poetry, dance and, of course, song.
