Live Music
Notes A recording of this concert (one full show and part of a second set) was found in the collection of one of the Comets for more than 40 years before it was released by Hydra Records in the late 1990s on the CD "Rock n' Roll Show". As of 2017 this is the only recording of Bill Haley and His Comets prior to the departure of original members Marshall Lytle, Dick Richards and Joey Ambrose a few months later (Let's All Rock Together was later recorded by the group they formed, the Jodimars). At this point, the group did not travel with a lead guitar player, so this role is played by Haley himself or Billy Williamson on steel guitar. Haley himself played slap bass for numbers sung by bassist Marshall Lytle. Haley was fighting laryngitis and as such was not in the best vocal form. In addition, a microphone issue rendered his vocals on the first number, "Birth of the Boogie", almost inaudible. This concert was recorded before "Rock Around the Clock" was reissued to tie-in with its use in the film Blackboard Jungle, thus this performance takes place on the eve of the rock and roll explosion. Confirmed songs performed (as included on the CD): Birth of the Boogie, Huckleberry, That's What You're Doing to Me (Marshall Lytle vocal), Let's All Rock Together (vocal by Lytle), Ol' Man River (Dick Richards vocal), 'Deed I Do (Richards vocal), Big Mamou (Billy Williamson vocal; the recording has him introducing "The Waltz You Saved For Me" first but this appears to be a joke to lead into this number), I've Told Every Little Star (Richards, Lytle, Williamson vocal), Rock Around the Clock, Dim Dim the Lights, Shake Rattle and Roll, Mambo Rock, Rock the Joint, Straight Jacket, Crazy Man Crazy.
