....and finally after all these years a fan video of the event is up on YouTube in the last month. Brian's first ever public solo performance. The video takes me right back there- seeing him do this was jaw dropping, and to shake hands with him in the meet and greet after the performance was at that time a dream. ( I have subsequently met him a few more times since, but never thought I would ever meet him). Here is the item he signed for me on that day
In 1988 Beach Boys fans were stunned when 'mystery guest' Brian Wilson appeared bounding on stage and super-animated from behind the curtain in the convention room, at the aptly named venue. There were gasps of surprise all around the room and then long applause for what seemed about ten minutes. He was accompanied to the venue (offstage) by Dr Eugene Landy, his svengali therapist, who was controlling Brian's every move at this time. Brian performed 3 songs solo with just an electric keyboard resting on a table (Surfer Girl, Love and Mercy, Night Time) for about 400 fans and then signed autographs. (.....form an orderly queue....). I can still clearly recall that amazing day, and Brian’s left leg agitatedly bouncing rapidly up and down under the table - he was a bag of nerves!
(Brian also sent 10 minute recorded messages for the following two years conventions.)
Brian’s first solo visit to and ‘gig’ in the U.K. and maybe the only gig he's played completely solo.
Trivia note: Darian Sahanaja (years later of Wondermints and Brian Wilson Band fame) attended the convention as a fan.
