Notes Ellington was the first black bandleader to play at this hotel's "Club Caprice." His band's engagement lasted from Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 1939. 15-minutes broadcasts of his show were broadcast twice daily on local station KXOK. On one of them, he played his own compositions "You Gave Me the Gate," "Solid Old Man," and "In a Mizz."
