Notes A Toast to Canada" was the theme of the Memphis in May gala, which was produced by the late David Gest. David, a producer and TV personality who lived in Memphis for several years, died April 12. Memphis in May president/CEO Jim Holt asked the audience for a moment of silence "in David Gest's memory." Lee Shockey, David's close friend, chaired the event. "When I told David it was Canada and I wanted it to be really great, he said, 'You need to let me do a show,'" she said. "He's the one who put together the show. He just kept adding people. He would call and say, 'We really need ...' I said, 'Oh, my God, you need to stop.' He said, 'I want it to be big. I want it to be fun.' After he passed, I wanted to go ahead and do it exactly as he had it. Just as a tribute to him. The cool thing was every entertainer said the same thing: 'I want to do it for David.'" Petula sang her hit, "Don't Sleep in the Subway," in memory of David, who, she said, used to call her up in the middle of the night and ask her to sing it to him. Images
