David Cross, Ashley Gray bass player reminisces about being bottom of the bill in Record Collector.

BOTTOM OF THE BILL

So there I was, trundling around my local Tesco, thinking it was a while since I’d bought a magazine. As one of my hobbies is collecting music on vinyl (not just collecting vinyl, but that’s another argument) I decided to give your magazine a go.
Naturally the ebay-O-Meter caught my eye. While I was still regretting the fact that I hadn’t bought Please Please Me (With The Beatles was my first LP purchase, the day it came out from my local electrical shop, 32s/6d) I turned the page, and there, in Most Wanted, to my absolute amazement, was a poster I hadn’t seen for 36 years… the one advertising St Hilda’s and St Edmund Hall Ball, 22nd June 1974.
The reason I remembered it so well was that I played it. It was my band’s first gig in Oxford after moving down from Birmingham. The memories came flooding back… Stackridge unravelling the fire hose opposite their dressing room, laying it across the corridor and pulling it tight as people walked past… The big-time chart-topping Charlie who locked himself away and wouldn’t mix with any of the other musos and how Shaky & The Sunsets vied with their neighbours (Stackridge!) to see who could make the most noise.
We were playing our own brand of laid-back jazz-funk in the garden when Ducks Deluxe arrived. Their lead guitarist walked straight up to Chris, our flute/sax player, who was away with the fairies in the middle of a looooong solo and shouted ‘Oi! Where’s our dressing room?’ Chris looked like he’d woken from a particularly bad nightmare and replied; ‘I don’t know. Who are you?’ ‘Who are we? WE’RE THE F***ING DUCKS MATE!’ Also, after the gig, it was fascinating watching the Ducks use their own very special brand of contact parking when they found their LWB Transit had been blocked in….
So, thanks RC for bringing back that warm June evening so many years ago, and send my love to Derek Smith (vocals/lead guitar), Chris Clark (flute/tenor/baritone/alto saxes), Michael Blant (keyboards) and Steven Barnes (percussion). I know you’re out there somewhere…
