The occasion was a celebration of the 750th anniversary of King John issuing a Royal Charter for settlers in Liverpool. The principal organiser of the event was Mrs Marjorie Roberts, who lived at 84, Roseberry Street. Her son Charles, who was a friend of Quarry Men drummer Colin Hanton (and who designed the group's logo on Hanton's bass drum), invited the group to play at the celebration. They played from the back of a stationary coal lorry.

Charles Roberts took some photos of the band playing, and they are believed to be the first ever photos of John Lennon playing live.

TopPopper 6th May 2015		If you look at the photo, there's someone wearing a light jacket at the bottom right. It's been suggested this is none other than Paul McCartney, unwittingly crossing paths with Lennon before they formally met. He is known to have worn a jacket like this, and also to have worn glasses, because he thought they looked cool. It does look like him, but I guess it's impossible to say.
