I reviewed this one, though I can't recall it ever being published anywhere so I probably never got round to actually sending it in - but this is how it went...

Having two veteran singer-songwriters playing gigs in the same city, on the same night, inevitably means that one or the other is bound to lose out in the attendance stakes. TV Smith seems to be the unlucky loser, with a two-thirds-full Adelphi - the rest of his potential audience having presumably shelled out £20 to see Sir Bob Geldof at the City Hall instead. A fool and his money, etc, etc…

These days, TV Smith plays solo - and acoustic - and although the concept of acoustic punk might seem slightly contradictory, this is what he does, and does well. TV opens with “Not In My Name” (initially released as a free download in 2003), a vicious condemnation of the so-called War On Terror. It’s easy to do this kind of thing clumsily, but “Not In My Name” enforces its point without relying on sentimentality or cliché. Quite simply, it’s ace.

Tonight’s set samples all TV’s post-Adverts albums, from 1992’s solo debut “March Of The Giants” to 2003’s “Not A Bad Day”, with a couple of new tracks thrown in for good measure. “The Lion And The Lamb”, “The Future Used To Be Better” and “Expensive Being Poor” are all stand-outs, though every track is a highlight in some way or another.

And then there are the Adverts numbers. Of course he plays “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes”, which somehow sounds even scarier when played acoustic, and he also squeezes another four or five Adverts songs into the set, including the superb “Bored Teenagers”.

A brilliant, frantic blast through “Xmas Bloody Xmas” brings proceedings to a fitting close - after several encores - and as TV hammers his guitar half to death you can’t help but feel quietly sorry for all those folks who chose Sir Bob instead.
