Unicorn performed Weekend live on children’s TV show Magpie in Studio 3. The band’s producer Dave Gilmour was present, but offstage, checking the sound mix.

chrisb 11th Jan 2025		Pat Martin also recalls that David Gilmour was in possession of one of the very first home TV video recorders. He had set his recorder to capture Unicorn’s live TV performance, but on arriving home later he discovered his cleaner had been in, seen lights on the vcr machine and switched it off at the mains wall socket! Pat had subsequently contacted Thames TV but they confirmed no recording had been retained in their archives. All the more amazing that a fan discovered only last year that they had a recording of the show at the end of an old tape, following on from an unrelated recording and not listed on the tapes contents. Finally the performance was able to be seen again.



chrisb 11th Jan 2025		Unicorn bassist Pat Martin recalls that their producer David Gilmour came with them to ensure the equipment and sound was set up just right on set. Magpie presenter Mick Robertson came over to Gilmour and said how great Pink Floyd had been recently at Knebworth. He asked if the Floyd might come back there again next year. Straight faced, and quick as a flash Gilmour responded “Thanks, but no man, we don’t do residencies!” Pat and drummer Pete Perryer were cracking up laughing hearing this, and during their performance tried hard not to look at each other, for fear of setting each other off again. Pat also recalls that on the sound check there was a bubble machine on the set. By the time they performed the studio floor was incredibly slippery and so for the live performance he dared hardly move his feet to ensure that he didn’t fall over on live TV.

chrisb 28th Mar 2024		A video of this one song live performance has recently been unearthed, believed to be, to date, the only known video surviving of Unicorn. Update- now up on YouTube 2 hours ago. As well as Weekend they also play In The Mood for the closing credits. (Video added)
