Life - Biography

Life was first an American humor and general interest magazine that was issued weekly from 1883 to 1936. Time magazine founder Henry Luce bought the original Life magazine in 1936 so that he could acquire the rights to its name. He then transformed the publication into a weekly news magazine with an emphasis on photography, particularly photojournalism. The new Life magazine was published weekly until 1972, then as occasional "special" issues until 1978, and finally as a monthly from 1978 to 2002.

Since then the Life name has continued to be used on special and commemorative magazines and magazine-sized paperback books. Life was also a weekly newspaper supplement from 2004 to 2007. The Time and Life names have also been used individually, or more often together, on hard-bound books (often issued in a series on a single or closely related topics), as well as documentary movies and newsreels, record albums, CDs, audio and video tapes, and DVDs.
