Notes cover: John Llewellyn Lewis (1880–1969) was an American leader of organized labor who served as president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) from 1920 to 1960. A major player in the history of coal mining, he was the driving force behind the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) during the Great Depression. Then he took the United Mine Workers out of the CIO in 1942 and in 1944 took the union into the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Although a Republican, he played a major role in helping Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt win the US Presidency in 1936, but he then broke with Roosevelt in 1940 because of FDR's anti-Nazi foreign policy. During World War II, Lewis was widely criticized for calling nationwide coal strikes, which critics believed to be damaging to the American economy and war effort. Time was generally hostile to Lewis and depicted him as a dangerous volcano on the cover of this issue of the magazine.
