cover: John Vereker (1886-1946), the sixth Viscount Gort of the United Kingdom, was a senior British Army officer. During the First World War he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was sent to France in the first year of the Second World War, but was evacuated the following year when Germany invaded that nation. He later served as governor of Gibraltar and Malta, and high commissioner for Palestine and Transjordan.
