cover: Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower (1890–1969) was raised in Abilene, Kansas. He was responsible during World War II for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in 1942–43 and the successful invasion of Normandy in 1944–45. He became a five-star general in the Army and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. He was elected President of the United States in 1952 as a Republican and was re-elected in 1956.
