Notes cover: Charles Luckman, president of Lever Brothers, a soap company based in the United Kingdom. Described by Time as a "boy wonder", Luckman was responsible for Lever Brothers decision to construct Lever House, a glass-box skyscraper at 390 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, as the headquarters for the activities in American of the company. It was built in the International Style according to the design principles of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and was the second curtain wall skyscraper in New York City after the United Nations Secretariat Building. It was begun in 1950 and completed in 1952. It marked a transition point for Park Avenue changing it from a boulevard of masonry apartment buildings to one of glass towers as other corporations also adopted the International Style for their new headquarters. Luckman left Lever Brothers before the Lever House was completed to begin an architecture career on his own, including the design of Madison Square Garden and the Theme Building and master plan for Los Angeles International Airport, among many others.
