From Heritage Auctions Newsletter of February 11, 2013:

New York City, 1974. The traditional Rock Music scene had become stale, bloated, and tired, but in lower Manhattan, an exciting new scene was happening, revolving around a Bowery club named CBGB's. Inspired by earlier bands like the Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges, and the New York Dolls, a new brand of Rock was being delivered by the Ramones, Television, Blondie, and others.

Twenty-one year old artist John Holmstrom, a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts, was hot to create a new magazine covering this burgeoning scene now being called Punk Rock. The brash young Holmstrom invited himself to Lou's table and asked for an interview. Reed, not the world's friendliest guy, surprisingly complied, and with this first interview (done in the style of a comic book page), Punk was born.

Holmstrom's cartoon vision of Lou Reed with Frankenstein-like bolts in his forehead (to show his "monstrous" influence on the scene) graced the first issue's cover. Soon, the use of the term "Punk Rock" became widespread, culminating with England's Sex Pistols outraging the entire world. And it all started here, with this famous cover art, which Holmstrom had originally gifted to his SVA teacher and inspiration, Harvey Kurtzman. ...
