cover: John Llewellyn Lewis (1880–1969) was an American leader of the United Mine Workers of America, which was the largest and most influential trade union in the nation and a major player in the area of coal mining, from 1920 to 1960. He was the driving force behind the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), which helped organize millions of industrial workers during the Great Depression of the 1930s. A powerful speaker and strategist, Lewis used the nation's dependence on coal to increase the wages and improve the safety of miners.
