cover: Ivar Kreuger (1880–1932) was a Swedish civil engineer, financier, entrepreneur and industrialist. In 1908, he co-founded the construction company Kreuger & Toll Byggnads AB. By using aggressive investments and innovative financial instruments, he then built a global match and financial empire. Between the two world wars, he negotiated match monopolies which controlled between two thirds and three quarters of worldwide match production. His financial empire collapsed during the Great Depression. Although Kreuger controlled many legitimate businesses, his match monopolies overvalued their assets in illegal ways. In 1932, Kreuger was found dead in his bedroom in Paris. The police called his death a suicide, but his family later claimed it was murder.
