Notes cover: Heinrich Aloysius Maria Elisabeth Brüning (1885–1970) was a German politician and academic who served as Chancellor of Germany from 1930 to 1932. Shortly after he took office the economic crisis caused by the Great Depression began. He responded by tightening credit and rolling back all wage and salary increases. These policies increased unemployment and made Brüning very unpopular. He established a so-called presidential government, basing his government's authority on emergency decrees. Fearing arrest by the Nazis as they gained power, he fled Germany in 1934. Images
