Notes cover price: 15 cents cover: Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was a British humorist and writer. At the forefront of cultural Zionism during the 19th century, he probably is best known for his play "The Melting Pot" (1908), which is about the problems of cultural intermixing. The play was an adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet", set in New York City. In it, a Russian Jew falls in love with a fellow Russian immigrant who is Christian. She is an idealistic settlement house worker, and he is a composer working on an "American symphony" to celebrate his adopted homeland. Together they manage to overcome old world animosities. But then he discovers that she is the daughter of the Tsarist officer who forced him to flee Russia. Horrified, he breaks up with her, betraying his belief in the possibility of transcending religious and ethnic issues. However, by the end of the play, the lovers are together again.
