cover: Samuel Gompers (1850-1924) was a British-born cigar maker, labor union leader, and key figure in American labor history. He founded the American Federation of Labor (AFof L), and served as it's president in 1886-1894 and 1895-1924. He promoted harmony among the different craft unions that comprised the organization, trying to minimize jurisdictional battles. He promoted shorter hours and higher wages, which he believed were the essential steps to emancipating workers. He also encouraged members to take political action to "elect their friends" and "defeat their enemies". During World War I, he openly supported the war effort.
