cover: John Wingate Weeks (1860–1926) was an American banker and Republican politician from Massachusetts. He served as mayor of Newton,1902-1903; a U.S. Representative, 1905-1913; and a U.S. Senator, 1913-1919. He was defeated for re-election in 1918. Following passage of the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this was the first time U.S. Senators were elected by the voters rather than chosen by the state legislature. His defeat was most likely because of his non- support of women's suffrage. President Warren G. Harding appointed him Secretary of War from 1921 to 1925.
