cover: Hermann Wilhelm Göring (1893–1946) was a leader of the Nazi Party, which ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. After Hitler became Chancellor, Göring became the second most powerful man in Germany. He was appointed head of the Luftwaffe (air force), and held that position until the end of the war. In 1939 Hitler designated Goring as his successor. However, Göring's standing with Hitler and the German public declined after the Luftwaffe could not prevent the Allied bombing of Germany's cities. After the war, Göring was convicted of war crimes. He was sentenced to death, but he committed suicide before the sentence could be carried out.
