Notes cover: Wallis Simpson (1896–1986), born Bessie Wallis Warfield, was an American whose intended marriage to the British king led to his abdication. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Her first marriage, to Win Spencer, ended in divorce. In 1931, during her second marriage, to Ernest Simpson, she met Edward, then Prince of Wales. Five years later, after Edward's accession as King of the United Kingdom, she divorced her second husband to marry Edward. The King's desire to marry a woman who had two living ex-husbands ultimately led to his abdication in 1936 to marry her. The former king was named Duke of Windsor by his brother and successor, King George VI. Wallis married Edward six months later, and was thereafter known as the Duchess of Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were suspected by many of being Nazi sympathisers. Time's Woman of the Year Images
