Notes cover price: 15 cents cover: Adolph Simon Ochs (1858–1935) was an American newspaper publisher and former owner of The New York Times and The Chattanooga Times. Born to a Jewish family in Cincinnati, Ohio, his parents were both German immigrants. His father, a highly educated man who was fluent in six languages, arrived in the United States in 1846. He taught at schools throughout the South, though he supported the Union during the Civil War. At age 19, Adolph borrowed $250 from his family to purchase a controlling interest in the Chattanooga Times, becoming its publisher. At age 38, he learned The New York Times could be bought at a greatly reduced price due to its financial losses and its many competitors in New York City. He borrowed money to purchase the Times for $75,000.
